7 Specific Google SEO Quality Guidelines

As a white hat SEO practitioner, I take everything the search engines say about SEO very seriously. If Google or Bing declares a particular link building or onsite optimization tactic black hat, then my company tries to avoid it at all costs when executing our clients’ SEO campaigns; I never   want to run a client’s website afoul of the search engine SEO quality guidelines.

Google’s Webmaster Guidelines are a great resource for site owners and those just getting into SEO because it clearly outlines what is and what isn’t acceptable SEO according to Google. I recently noticed that Google added seven specific SEO quality guidelines, in addition to the basic principles, to help steer site owners down the right path. Here is an overview of those guidelines:

Add hidden text or hidden links.

This is a very old school black hat tactic, yet some site owners don’t even realize they are guilty of it. Check out the color scheme of your website—is the font color distinct enough from the background (black on white vs. light gray on white) that it’s obvious where the text is? Trying to hide text or links by matching the font color to the background color used to be a way site owners would stuff their pages with keywords or links to try and trick the search engines, but keep visitors to the site from noticing.

Don’t use cloaking or sneaky redirects.

Cloaking is when you present different content or URLs to your visitors than you do to the search engines. Along those lines, a “sneaky” redirect is when site owners “embed a link in JavaScript that redirects the user to a different page with the intent to show the user a different page than the search engine sees… Like cloaking, this practice is deceptive because it displays different content to users and to Googlebot, and can take a visitor somewhere other than where they intended to go.”

Don’t send automated queries to Google.

Bugging Google with automated messages about how long it is going to take until your site is indexed or updates are taken into effect isn’t going to make it happen any faster. First off, the odds of you getting a real response from a real human at Google are slim to nil. If you have a question about Google’s SEO quality guidelines it’s best to look to the Google Webmaster forums for an answer.

Don’t load pages with irrelevant keywords.

It doesn’t matter how many searches a keyword has in a month if it doesn’t accurately reflect the content on your page! You can tell Google that your site is about apples, but it the content focuses on bananas you’ll never do well for apple related searches. Secondly, stuffing your website with banana-related keywords isn’t a better alternative. You want to keep the flow of your content natural for your readers. There is no “right” number of times that a keyword needs to appear on a page in order for your site to rank well for it.

Don’t create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with substantially duplicate content.

Google recognizes that a site might have two versions on the same page (web version and printer friendly version), and this duplicate content is actually meant to make for a better user-experience, and not trick the search engines. However, according to Google, site owners should be wary of duplicate content that is “deliberately duplicated across domains in an attempt to manipulate search engine rankings or win more traffic. Deceptive practices like this can result in a poor user experience, when a visitor sees substantially the same content repeated within a set of search results.”

Don’t create pages with malicious behavior, such as phishing or installing viruses, trojans, or other badware.

I feel like this one should be a no-brainer. Don’t turn your website into a scam machine.

Avoid “doorway” pages created just for search engines, or other “cookie cutter” approaches such as affiliate programs with little or no original content.

“Doorway pages are typically large sets of poor-quality pages where each page is optimized for a specific keyword or phrase. In many cases, doorway pages are written to rank for a particular phrase and then funnel users to a single destination…we frown on practices that are designed to manipulate search engines and deceive users by directing them to sites other than the ones they selected, and that provide content solely for the benefit of search engines.” Don’t try to play both the search engines and the end user. A good user-experience is good SEO!

If your site participates in an affiliate program, make sure that your site adds value. Provide unique and relevant content that gives users a reason to visit your site first.

As Google says, “There is no problem in being an affiliate as long as you create some added value for your users and produce valuable content that gives a user a reason to visit your site.” Website owners should always want to create unique, engaging content that readers are going to find useful. The entirety of your SEO campaign essentially rests on the quality of your content, and your online brand depends on your website’s content to target the right audience and build consumer confidence.

How to Launch Your Own Book

Can’t afford more than $5,000 to hire a publicist to launch and promote your new book?

Don’t feel bad. Nine out of 10 authors can’t. But if you know the inside tricks, you can do it yourself and watch books fly off the shelves, without having to take out a second mortgage on your house to pay for a publicist.

Publicity expert Joan Stewart, aka The Publicity Hound, is partnering with book publicist Penny Sansevieri for a special webinar from 4-6 p.m. Eastern Time this Thursday, Dec. 6.

Penny will take you by the hand walk you step by step through the basics of how to launch a new book, or promote a book that’s been around for awhile.

Joan and Penny both have a reputation of presenting programs that are very affordable and packed with content.

If you can’t attend live, register anyway and Joan will send you the video replays and all the bonuses so you can review them whenever it’s most convenient. The jewels in the whopping bonus package go in-depth with training on topics like keyword research and how to use Pinterest to sell books.

3 Steps to Publishing Your Blog to Kindle

This has got to be the biggest no-brainer there is, but who would have thought of it? I certainly didn’t until I read this blog post today.

So, I’m going to share their content on how to create and publish your blog to Kindle.

1. Create your Kindle Publishing Account

The standard Amazon account won’t work, so you’ll need to sign up for the Kindle Publishing Account if you don’t already have one.

2. Add and publish

When you log into your Kindle publishing account, click Add Blog, and fill in the signup form. You’ll need to provide your blog feed, bank account, etc…..(don’t know your blog feed? Ask your VA)

Once you’re done adding all the info, hit Generate Blog Preview. If you get the blog preview, cool. Go to step three! If you get an error as shown in the image below, don’t get teary. Just click the Save button and then hit Return to Dashboard. Here, you’ll see your blog has been saved as a draft. Open it and try again, and this time there will be no error.

Now go ahead and click the Publish button.

Don’t forget to add a screenshot (choose the most appealing page on your blog), as it will be displayed on the Amazon sales page.

At the end of the day, it should look something like this:

3. Choose payment options

You’ll be redirected to a page where you can enter your address, business type etc. and choose the desired payment option. After that, your blog may take 48 to 72 hours to appear on Amazon.

How it works

To make a long story short, this is a quick self-publishing tool to help you sell your blog on the Kindle store. Its working is similar to RSS: your updates are auto-delivered wirelessly to the Kindle and updated throughout the day.

The only difference is that instead of just the headline, your readers can access the full text content plus most images on your blog. Moreover, the updates are downloaded to the Kindle and can be read even when the device is not connected to the internet.

My Thanksgiving Card –The Rest of the Story

My Thanksgiving Card --The Rest of the StoryWhen I sent out the digital Thanksgiving card with the giant orange pumpkin earlier last week, it wasn’t a big deal. I just wanted to wish clients, friends and family a Happy Thanksgiving.

I was bowled over by the response! Of the 63 cards sent, 12 people replied with very nice messages. Several of them were clients. Two responded with e-postcards. One said “what an unexpected surprise”. Another said “It was so nice to hear from you, it’s been too long. Let’s have lunch.”

One client wrote back and said she wants to get together after Thanksgiving to discuss a new project she wants me to do for her.

Another client liked the gesture so much that she wants me to start sending digital cards to all of HER clients for the holidays, starting next week.

That’s went the light bulb went on.

I’m going to be adding this service to my business–sending digital greeting cards on your behalf to your clients, not only during the holidays, but at any time during the year when your customers least expect it. And just to say “I appreciate you”, “Thank you for your business” or for any other reason.

If this sounds like something you’d like me to do for you this holiday season, or maybe even early next year, call me at 619-955-5772 and let’s get it on the calendar. You have a choice of some really snazzy cards for Christmas, Hanukkah and the New Year–so snazzy, in fact, that they almost look like well-orchestrated multi-media light shows. But VERY classy.

I have also decided that this is something I am going to incorporate into my business.

Let me know if you’d like to see some samples.

How Many Pages Are Best For My Website?

How Many Pages Are Best For My Website? That’s a loaded question and does not have a right answer.

Obviously, each business has a unique set of products/services, target audience, and profile. You want to make sure that your website is fresh, attractive and informative. People visiting your website want to see something that piques their curiosity or interest in you. Or put another way, “What are you going to do for me that will… (Fill in the blank). Always keep that ideal customer in mind when crafting your message. The content must be relevant, new and, of course, SEO “friendly”.

For a good SEO campaign, each page needs to be both keyword-rich and current. That means pages that they are updated frequently with good (relevant) content that is keyword-rich and unique. There is no advantage to using a template or basic page format and tweaking the content. Search engines will not know which page to rank for what keywords; you will be in essence competing with yourself. Similarly formatted content can easily be classifies as duplicate content and you might be penalized or ignored by the search engines.

Your business website should have the number of pages that is right for you. There is no exact number. People access your website to learn more about you and your product or services. Make sure there is adequate information that establishes you as an expert in your field or industry with a product (or service) that delivers solid results, value, and customer satisfaction. Testimonials speak volumes about your credibility and expertise.

Accomplishments both impress and can entice potential customers to act. Use pages to anticipate and answer questions or concerns with solid, concise references to reputable content. Search engines determine the quality of each page in order to provide the best possible results for the searcher. As long as they serve a purpose with fresh meaningful content, there aren’t too many that can dilute or penalize your site.

If you get stuck, go back to the basics. Ask your loyal customers what about you attracted them to you and capitalize on any input from them. Review your competition’s websites. Does your website communicate your passion? Is there a clear message that promises value and results . Remember your mission and endeavor to effectively communicate it through the content on each page.
